PBA Galleries' golf auction to take place on March 5

Historical Gossip about Golf and Golfers, by a Golfer (1863) is to highlight an auction of golf books at PBA Galleries in San Francisco on March 5.

The lot carries an estimate of $10,000-15,000.

Hughes' book offers an interesting history of the sport

PBA explains that the book "contains an absorbing history of the Bruntsfield Links, descriptions of Dutch 'Kolf' and French 'Jeu de Mail', the now famous sketch of 'Cock o' the Green', and a reprint of 'The Golfers Garland', one of the two poems added to the third edition of Mathison's The Goff."

It's described as one of the most important early works on the sport.

Another important history of golf, Harold Hilton and Garden G Smith's The Royal & Ancient Game of Golf (1912), is likely to prove another highlight with a valuation of $10,000-15,000.

The book covers the foundations of the game in detail, reflecting on its origins and technique. This copy includes a rare signature from Hilton, justifying its valuation.

The similarly titled Golf: A Royal & Ancient Game (1876), edited by Robert Clark, is valued at $7,000-10,000.

Joseph Murdoch describes the book in his Library of Golf (1966): "This book is one of the masterpieces of golf literature. It is also one of the most important contributions to the library of golf and one of the most handsomely produced of all golf books, even to this date."
