Donald Bradman's baggy green looks undervalued

One of cricketing legend Sir Donald Bradman's (1908-2001) baggy green caps is set to sell in Australia on December 18, when it is expected to achieve a strong result.

The cap will be sold in Victoria with an estimate of $157,500-210,000, with the auction house attributing the relatively low estimate to the vendor's desire for a quick sale. The current record price for one of Bradman's baggy greens is $402,500, which was set in 2008.

Widely recognised as the greatest test batsman in the history of cricket, Bradman rose to become an integral part of the Australian cricket team in just over two years. His 20 year career saw him set several records, with the former Australian captain Bill Woodfull describing him as "worth three batsmen to Australia".

Such was his international reputation for scoring, the England cricket team developed the controversial "Bodyline" technique in a desperate attempt to quell Bradman's relentless batting.

The cap was worn by Bradman during a 1934 tour of England and has been signed by the great sportsman. It was originally gifted to Bradman's golf coach, Jack Bahen, and was then passed down to Bahen's daughter Gretta Richardson, who has consigned it to auction.

The item will be accompanied in the sale by a signed letter from Bradman confirming its authenticity, as well as a DVD featuring 1950s footage of Bradman and Bahen playing golf.
