McClure dominated the light middleweight division during the Games.

The medals at the 1960 Olympics were the first made to be worn. They were also the first inscribed with the sport they were awarded for.

Ten "Pugilato" or boxing gold medals were made for distribution across the various weight classes. Muhammad Ali was awarded an identical one in the heavyweight division.

Robert Livingston, executive VP at RR Auction, said: "Between its tremendous rarity and historical interest, this museum-quality medal represents the pinnacle of Olympic artifacts".

A St Louis 1904 Olympic participation medal is likely to prove another highlight, with an identical valuation of $20,000-25,000.

The medals issued that year were only presented to athletes and are the rarest Olympic participation medals.

Around 700 people from 12 nations competed; making it the smallest games in the event's modern history.
