'Stock Exchange' postage stamp with printing error to be traded at auction

At time of writing, Cherrystone's second September auction is shortly to conclude with Charles Matuzas's collection of the Stamps and Postal History of Lithuania (1919-1941) going under the hammer.

We'll bring you the results of that shortly - not to mention the Ivanov collection which Cherrystone sold last week, for which results are pending.

However, tomorrow sees the start of the most exciting sale of the three: a two day auction of US and World stamps. We've already reported on some of the Chinese stamps involved: an error and a surcharged stamp are expected to bring a total of $500,000.

But as the name of the auction suggests, there are also some American classics on offer, notably in the modern section.

This includes a set of three mint unused 1930 65c-$2.60 Zeppelin issues as well as three on cover, expected to sell for $1,000 and 1,500 respectively.

There is also a wonderful 1981 Space Achievement, block of eight, faint horizontal punched perforations. Very fine, and possibly unique in this form, it is listed at $3,000. But these are left standing by one lot.

This is a 1992 29c New York Stock Exchange Bicentennial with the centre inverted. A right sheet margin block of four, which also shows traces of the vignette in the selvage, it boasts brilliant colours, and has never been hinged and is in general very fine.

Two panes in total were discovered, each consisting of 40 stamps. Of these 28 on each were with the centres inverted (12 were with centres completely omitted), hence a total of only 56 Inverted Stock Exchange errors are recorded.

As the two panes were broken up, only two or three blocks of four still exist. As singles, their catalogue value would be $76,000, so Cherrystone's suggested opening bid of $50,000 seems quite reasonable.

Watch this space for the results of this exciting auction.
