An historic and scarce stamp error is among the hidden gems in Vance's online philatelic auction, tomorrow (October 14).

The stamp in question is one of the famous Pan-American stamps of 1901, issued between May and October of that year to promote America's thriving industry.

A steam hauler, an automobile and the large singlespan bridge beneath Niagra Falls each had a stamp design devoted to them - as did a lake steamer...

The scarce 1¢ Pan-American inverted stamp

The wheel-propelled steamer is shown from its port bow. Its notable features include one funnel while the pilot house is well-forward.

Alongside it are the words "Commemorative series, 1901", and beneath it "United States of America."

Of course, you don't need to be an expert philatelist to see that this is a stamp with a difference. Its centre is inverted: a print error, which adds to both its scarcity and value.

The inverted 1¢ Pan-American is described by Vance as being in "mint" condition and is partly glazed within its original gum.

It is estimated at $12,500, and will be sold with a 1987 American Philatelic Society Certificate (pictured above).

Vance is based in Smithville, Ontario, Canada. But thanks to the wonders of online bidding, you won't need to travel all the way to Canada to get involved.
