Australian 2 shilling Kangaroo strip sells for $45,500

A strip of three Australian 2 shilling brown Kangaroo stamps has sold for $42,552 at Mossgreen Auctions in Victoria, Australia.

The lot achieved the highest bids at the April 30 sale of the Julian Sterling Philately Collection, which consisted of an array of early kangaroo stamps.

Kangaroo stamps shilling strip
The Kangaroo stamp is one of the most recognisable pieces of Australian postal history

The famous "Roo" stamp is undoubtedly the most iconic symbol of Australian philately. The first examples were issued in 1913 and the series remained in print until the early 1940s.

The strip displays strong colour, excellent margins and is one of only two known examples to feature the highly desirable CA monogram to the bottom right.

The other is held in the Royal Collection, making this the only specimen in private hands.

A rare used 2d grey with an inverted watermark was another highlight, achieving $20,425.

Only 10 used examples of this error stamp are recorded, with this being one of the finest known. It features a very light cancel, further increasing its desirability among collectors.

A 5 shilling grey and chrome, one of only three examples to feature the rare JBC monogram on the selvage, sold for $13,049.

It originates from a specimen set and features a large cancel to the left.

We have a superb range of stamps available, including a number from the British Commonwealth - including this 1885-1886 £1 rose-lilac issued in New South Wales.
