1992 Stock Exchange Bicentennial error stamp may see $19,000

A fine example of the extremely rare 1992 29c Stock Exchange Bicentennial error is to provide one of the biggest draws in a US auction, which will be held on December 7-8 in New Jersey.

The stamp is currently selling with a minimum bid of just $8,500, but is likely to sell closer to its Scott Catalogue valuation of $19,000.

1992 Stock Exchange Bicentennial error stamp auction
The Bicentennial is actually rarer than both the Inverted Jenny and CIA Invert

In April, a right sheet margin block of four of the 29c stamp sold for an impressive $57,500. That sale followed the auction of the only other remaining block for $71,875 in September 2011.

The stamp was originally issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the New York Stock Exchange, which was founded in 1792 when the Buttonwood Agreement was signed. Only two error panes were discovered, each consisting of just 40 stamps. Of these, just 28 had the centre inverted, making a total of 56 error stamps.

Perhaps the most desirable modern error in US philately, the stamp is actually rarer than its more famous counterparts - the Inverted Jenny and CIA Invert.

The example at auction is in fantastic condition, with full original gum and having never been hinged. It boasts near perfect centring, strong colours and will be accompanied in the sale by a PSE certificate, graded VF 80.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a superb range of investment-grade stamps for sale, including the unique Hong Kong 96c Olive-Bistre colour error block - one of the greatest treasures of Hong Kong philately.
