John Lennon's piano achieves $74,500 at Nate D Sanders auction

A piano that was owned and played by the Beatles' John Lennon has sold among the top lots at Nate D Sanders' latest online sale, which closed for bids yesterday (November 21).

John Lennon piano
The piano was originally sold through Sotheby's, and was accompanied by a certificate from Yoko Ono

The Mason and Hamlin reed organ is made from walnut wood with a dark cherry finish. Accompanied by a slip inscribed, "Love to Julie/From John Lennon/xxx", it sold for $74,535.

The piano was previously auctioned at Sotheby's in 1984 and sold with the original catalogue from the sale, as well as an auction house-issued certificate of ownership signed by Yoko Ono.

The Steinway Model Z piano that Lennon used to compose his hit Imagine sold for $2.1m to singer George Michael in 2000. Michael saw off the likes of Robbie Williams and Liam and Noel Gallagher, who were also placing bids on the piece. See our top five John Lennon memorabilia.

Bruce Lee shoes
The shoes were donated to Lee's friend Herb Jackson, with a certificate of authenticity from his son accompanying the lot.

Bruce Lee's platform shoes also sold well at the auction, making $38,781. The shoes were among several given by Lee's widow to the two men closest to him with a similar shoe size, his brother and close friend Herb Jackson.

The sale of Nat Lofthouse's award demonstrates how collectibles can prove lucrative as investments

Also featuring was a Footballer of the Year trophy awarded to Nat Lofthouse in 1953. The Bolton Wanderers forward's award was originally sold at Bonhams on November 5 for £12,500 ($20,006) but, less than a month later in the present sale, it made $30,819 - a perfect example of the profit-making potential of collectibles.
