Monroe and DiMaggio’s wedding certificate to sell

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio’s marriage certificate is selling at Goldin Auctions.

The baseball star and the actress tied the knot in a small ceremony in San Francisco in 1954.

However, their marriage was short lived.

Monroe DiMaggio certificate

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio divorced less than a year after the wedding

Less than a year later Marilyn filed for divorce on the grounds of mental cruelty.

DiMaggio was extremely jealous over Marilyn’s status as a sex symbol, which would cause regular arguments.

During filming for the infamous subway scene in The Seven Year Itch, he grew so enraged by the crowds gawping up her skirt that he stormed off to get drunk.

Later that evening he beat her in their hotel room.

This proved to be the last straw for Marilyn, who filed for divorce the next day.

DiMaggio never truly got over her and never found another person to share the rest of his life with.

Despite the divorce, they saw each other regularly – even after Marilyn married Arthur Miller.

It was actually DiMaggio who arranged and paid for her funeral after she died of an overdose in 1962.

In 1999, while on his death bed, his last words were "I’ll finally get to see Marilyn again".

The certificate comes from DiMaggio’s own collection and is housed in its original envelope.

It’s expected to beat $75,000 when it crosses the block on May 20.
