Marilyn Monroe's favourite coat realises 44% increase on estimate

Marilyn Monroe's "favourite coat" realised $173,000 at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills on December 5, up 44.1% on a $120,000 estimate.

The star wore the fawn, silk overcoat extensively between 1956 and 1959.

Julien's commented prior to the sale: "As a newlywed, she modeled the coat in an iconic June 30, 1956, road trip and photoshoot with her new husband, playwright Arthur Miller, to his country home in Roxbury, Connecticut…

"Other extant photos include Monroe and Miller in June 26, 1959 as they departed New York's Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City after Monroe's hospitalization for gynecological surgery."

An October 9, 1954 letter from Monroe's then husband Joe DiMaggio also sold well, achieving $78,125.

It was valued at $4,000 - equating to an increase of 1,853%.

It was written just three days after the couple announced their divorce in the press, following weeks of speculation.

He writes: "Don't know what you're thoughts are about me, - but I can tell you I love you sincerely, - way deep in my heart, irregardless of anything."

The sale featured a wealth of artefacts from across Hollywood history, including a selection of flying machines that have appeared in James Bond films.
