Frodo's Sting sword from Lord of the Rings to make $200,000?

The sword wielded by Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy will lead a sale of props from the films at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills on December 5. It carries an estimate of $100,000-200,000.

The collection was accumulated by a single collector over the past decade and features a range of prosthetics, costumes and ephemera from the series.

Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien's Auctions, commented: "The Trilogy Collection: Props and Costumes from Middle-Earth promises to be an epic event and one that will definitely make history."

"It has been more than a decade since the first of the trilogy films was released and in that time only a handful of items from these films have ever been publicly offered for sale. Demand for this memorabilia is extraordinarily high and the scale and quality of this remarkable collection is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for fans and collectors."

A Ringwraith costume display could make $80,000-100,000, while Aragorn's sword and Gimli's battle-axe both have identical estimates of $50,000-70,000.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is the highest grossing series of all time with the finale, Return of the King, tied with Ben Hur and Titanic for the most Oscars awarded to a single film. The auction is expected to generate sales of over $1.5m.
