1933 Little Women Oscar achieves $112,500 in online auction

The single Oscar won by the 1933 classic Little Women has seen the highest bids in an online auction that closed yesterday (December 19).

Presented to the writers of the film at the sixth Academy Awards in 1934, the award sold for $112,368 after receiving 17 bids. It was originally offered with a minimum bid of just $2,500.

A plaque on the trophy's black Belgian marble base is engraved "Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences First Award 1933", with a further medallion on its base reading "Academy First Award to Sara Y Mason and Victor Heerman for Writing Adaptation of Little Women".

Mason and Heerman were the husband and wife writing team that first adapted Louisa May Alcott's classic 1868 novel, with remakes also produced in 1949 and 1994. The 1933 film was David O Selznick's last production for RKO, and while it was nominated for Best Picture and Best Direction, this was its only win.

The current auction record for an Oscar award is held by the Best Film award for Gone with the Wind, which was bought by Michael Jackson for $1.5m in 1999.

Achieving the second highest bids in the sale was Sammy Davis Jr's Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement, which was presented to him in 2001. Selling for $15,786, it is one of just two Grammys that Davis won during his career, the other being his Hall of Fame award.
