Tony Hawk's 900 skateboard deck

A skateboard that flew through the 900 degrees of the most famous trick in skateboarding history is up for sale in a Los Angeles auction dedicated to its ride, Tony Hawk.

Hawk rode the board up a ramp and off it and then through two-and-a-half spins to make it the 900 board: 360 X 2.5 = 900.

Now the board deck will be auctioned by Julien’s Auctions in a sale being curated by the legendary skater and offering to collectors pretty much everything that flew through the air that day at the 1999 X Games in San Francisco.

You want his shoes? That’ll probably cost you up to $5,000. Knee pads? $6,000. His helmet? $7,000. Even his access passes are up for grabs with a $2,000 top estimate.

The board though - Birdhouse brand Tony Hawk Falcon 2 fitted with Fury trucks - is something else.

That’s expected to realise between $500,000 and $700,000 at the sale on September 23 in Los Angeles.

Julien’s are pretty clear on how they rate the board: “The trick landed on the half-pipe like an earthquake in the world of sports. Much like Babe Ruth’s “Called Shot” bat, Serena Williams’ 23rd Grand Slam racket, or Michael Jordan’s “Flu Game” sneakers, Hawk’s 900 transcended a single athletic achievement. It was a redefining moment for skateboarding, propelling it into the global spotlight and cementing Hawk’s status not just as a legend in his field, but as one of the most transformative athletes in the history of modern sports.”

It took Hawk 12 goes to complete the fabled spins. A cheering crowd was bolstered by a gathering of his competitors, who also roared him on, as he made a landing that many thought was impossible.

“This is the best day of my life,” Hawk roared.

He retired from the sport not long after, but his starring role in a massive Tony Hawk videogame franchise has made him comfortably the best-known skate celebrity.

And this board would be comfortably the most valuable ever sold if it gets to its estimates.

One of Hawk’s boards made just short of £20,000 in 2012. Another, on which rider Jamie Thomas had scrawled the lyrics to Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind, sold for £27,500 around the sime time.

Kurt Cobain’s decoration made another board worthy of a $35,200 winning bid in 2022.

Will Hawk’s board soar to a history-making height one more time?

Find out on September 23.
