The 350-year-old Royal playboy

He's been described as “the playboy monarch”.

A King with a glint in his eye.

Nicknamed 'Old Rowley' after his favourite stallion racehorse.

And a father to at least 12 illegitimate children.

He used public taxes to pay for his mistresses.

But his subjects loved him all the more.

Charles II was certainly popular 350 years ago.

And by the sounds of it...

He would have been quite at home in the 21st century as well.

The very Merry Monarch.

King Charles II
"We have a pretty, witty king,
"Whose word no man relies on"
"He never said a foolish thing,
"And never did a wise one."
Lord Rochester (1647 - 1680)

Charles II is one of the most colourful characters in British Royal history.

He reigned from 1660 until his death in 1685, and was hugely popular.

Along with his legendary love life he was also tolerant and good humoured, with a keen mind and a passion for art and science.

And in historic terms he's also one of the most important.

He restored the monarchy in 1660 after the English Civil War, the execution of his father Charles I, and the brutal rule of Oliver Cromwell.

And although he left no legitimate heir to the throne, his family tree plays a large role in today's monarchy.

He's an ancestor of both Princess Diana and Queen Camilla.

And when Prince William becomes King he will be the first British monarch descended from Charles II.

So if you're fascinated by Royal history, Charles II would be a significant addition to your collection.

And this highly rare manuscript, signed in 1668, lets you do just that.

A bold Royal signature.

King Charles II

This is a spectacular vellum manuscript measuring 9 x 14 inches.

Its impressive size makes it ideal for display.

And it bears a large clear example of Charles II's Royal signature.

Displayed very prominently at the top of the page.

Signed “Charles R” (the R is for Rex – Latin for king).

It also includes a small typed label which reads “Charles II” beneath the signature, affixed to the document by a former owner.

The manuscript survives in good condition for a document of this age.

It's mounted on white paper and displays a light tear that goes through the signature.

It also has minor paper loss to the left edge and bottom corner, and the usual creases and toning acquired over three and a half centuries.

Royal documents from the reign of Charles II are exceptionally rare.

And to discover one with such a fine signature is good fortune indeed.

350 years of remarkable history.

King Charles II

The manuscript is dated November 13, 1668.

The text addresses the Commissioners of the Treasury (including George Monck and the Duke of Albermarle).

It requests a salary payment of £100 to Peter Du Moulin, Secretary of the Council for Trade and a chaplain at Canterbury Cathedral.

Du Moulin (1601 – 1684) was a French-English clergyman who sided with the Royalists during the English Civil War.

He published two tracts against the regicide of Charles I, but managed to remain anonymous – and so avoided the wrath of Oliver Cromwell.

And when Charles II was restored to the throne, he rewarded Du Moulin's loyalty with a chaplaincy at Canterbury Cathedral.

Knowing the history behind this document brings it to life.

It adds greatly to your collection, and your knowledge of the subject.

And after all, that's why we collect these treasures in the first place.

Own this magnificent Royal rarity.
