Pink Floyd autographs: Now's the time

Pink Floyd autographs are in hot demand.

And no wonder.

They're among the most influential acts of the 20th century.

But there has been a noticeably jump in price over the past decade.

Well, there’s a couple of good reasons for that.

Starting with...

The internet has changed the market

Pink Floyd sold an estimated 200-250m records worldwide over their careers.

While they performed their last shows in 2005, they retain an enormous global fan base.

Only a few years ago Pink Floyd autographs were only really traded by those in the know.

Today the market has widened dramatically, as fans are able to communicate with one another online. Memorabilia is now traded through international auction houses, visible to anyone with an internet connection.

The market for autographs extends far beyond the town or country where the item is offered for sale.

Also...

Pink Floyd was really two bands

Syd Barrett was Pink Floyd’s original singer and main songwriter.

Soon after the band released their first album (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn) he developed schizophrenia. Over time he became increasingly unpredictable and withdrawn. He was ejected from the band for good in 1968.

After two astonishing solo records, Barratt spent the rest of his life living quietly in Cambridge.

The band brought in David Gilmour as Barratt's replacement and the music became very different.

Barratt had a fascination with bucolic English imagery.

Gilmour, on the other hand, brought in the lengthy spaced out jams for which the band is best remembered.

Complete Pink Floyd signatures from Barratt’s time in the band are extremely rare.

End of an era

In 2005, Pink Floyd played their last show.

Syd Barrett died in 2006. Keyboardist Richard Wright died in 2008.

And in 2014, the band released their final album.

For fans, the last decade and a half has represented the end of the Pink Floyd story.

There has been a marked increase in demand for memorabilia as a consequence.

And autographs, which offer a unique connection to the signer, are among the most sought after.

Paul Fraser.
