A supremely rare and important letter

I read something that surprised me this week.

A report on paintings sold at Sotheby's.

It showed that from 2018 to 2023, Claude Monet outsold Andy Warhol.

Almost three times over.

That clearly proves Monet's enduring popularity.

Market trends come and go, but Monet's work remains one of the safest places to store your money.

Wealthy collectors have always known this.

That's why 'Le bassin aux nympheas', from his famous Water Lilies series, sold in November last year for $74 million.

And it will undoubtedly sell for more in the future.

Claude Monet outsold Andy Warhol

Sadly I can't offer you one of Monet's artworks today.

If I had one of those, I'd have retired to the beach years ago!

But I can offer you the next best thing.

A rare chance to add Claude Monet's name to your collection.

And you don't need to be a billionaire to invest in it.

It's a valuable piece of art history, from the same hand that painted those timeless water lilies.

And it has a remarkable story to tell.

Signed by the artist.

Claude Monet letter

It's a wonderful Claude Monet letter.

Handwritten and signed by the artist in 1884.

And by far the finest example I've handled in my 45-year career.

There are three main reasons why I rate it so highly.

1) The condition is superb.

Written across two sides of a single sheet measuring 4.5 x 7.25 inches, this letter has been beautifully preserved for 140 years.

The edges and corners are sharp, and there are no tears or paper loss. Just some minor marks and the original mailing folds.

2) It features a prime example of his autograph.

Monet's handwriting and his signature are both crisp and clear. They're unfaded by time, and appear almost fresh on the page.

3) The content is of major significance.

Because it relates directly to one of Monet's most notable paintings: his famous 'Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe', painted in 1865.

It's highly rare to find a Monet letter directly linked to a major work.

And what's more, this letter doesn't just mention the painting...

It helped Monet save it from destruction.

The tale of an (almost) lost masterpiece.

Claude Monet

Monet began Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (Luncheon on the Grass) in 1865, when he was just 25 years old.

It's been described as "the most important painting of Monet's early period".

He believed it would establish his name in Paris, and he wrote "I can think of nothing but my painting and if I had to leave it, I think I would go mad".

But as he struggled financially, he was unable to finish it.

And what's worse, he had to use it to pay off his debts.

He gave it to his landlord Alexandre Flament to cover his back-rent.

Flament took the rolled-up canvas and stored it in his cellar. And Monet promised to one day return, repay his debt and take back the painting.

Those days stretched into years.

And it wasn't until 1884, once he had made his name as a successful artist, that he could finally buy it back.

Monet's rescue mission.

The letter is offered in fine condition, with an exceptional example of Monet's signature.

The letter is dated January 10, 1884.

And it's addressed from Monet's famous house in Giverny, where he lived for 43 years and painted his iconic 'Water Lilies' series.

He writes (in French):

"Mr Flament, I have meant to write to you for a long time about my belongings that are still with you and especially about my large painting that is probably very troublesome for you because of its size.

"Can you please be so kind as to give me news about the painting because I am now better paid here and I believe it would be possible for me to relieve you from keeping it."

Sadly for Monet, he sent it too late.

All that remains...

The two surviving sections of the painting now hang together in the renowned Musée d'Orsay in Paris

The damage to the painting had already been done.

"When I finally had enough money to get it back, it had gone mouldy," he later recalled.

Monet was forced to cut up his beloved canvas, to save at least part of it.

Today just two fragments of the original painting survive.

They're on display in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, where millions of visitors can take a glimpse at what might have been.

But without this letter, there would be nothing left at all.

Which makes it an important piece of art history in its own right.
