Today in History... Elizabeth II becomes Queen

Elizabeth II has been Queen for 57 years today. 57 years ago, she was staying at Treetops hotel in Kenya, on an official royal visit, as her father, George VI was too ill to go. He had even been warned against seeing her off at the airport, but did so anyway.

A week into her trip he died of a heart attack, making her Queen.

As a monarch, the Queen's face has appeared on many high end collectibles, especially some coins, such as the British dateless 20p and the Canadian dot cent.

She is also in control of one of the greatest rare stamp collections currently in existence which includes the only examples of some pieces, and all but one of some others (such as this Sweet Briar and Cayman Island piece).

Of course any items associated with her directly become collectible in their own right. Collectors of royal memorabilia will be interested to know that signed photographs of her both alone and with Prince Philip are currently available, as are signed photos of her son Prince Charles with Diana, one with a baby Prince William, and one with both William and Harry.
