"Martin Luther King Jr. was the conscience of his generation. He made our nation stronger because he made it better. His dream sustains us yet."
U.S President Jimmy Carter
Hi fellow collector,
On this day in 1968, the world lost Martin Luther King.
His life stolen by an assassin's bullet. A gunshot that shocked the nation.
But his dream of peace and equality still lives on, in the hearts and minds of those he inspired - and continues to inspire today.
Around the world there are countless memorials to his life, from local parks to national monuments, all named in his honour.
In America alone there are more than 1,000 streets named after Martin Luther King. Millions of people pass along them every day.
The iconic signs bearing his name are there to keep his memory alive.
And if you want to pay your own tribute to King through your collection...
Here's a rare chance to own one of them - direct from the heart of Los Angeles
This original sign from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Los Angeles, California is available today.
Purchase it now for just
£2,500 / $3,240
It's highly unusual to find one of these genuine signs available to own.
I've certainly never seen another on the market.
Due to the length of King's name, many traffic signs shorten it to King Blvd or MLK Blvd.
So this one featuring his full name is rarer than most across the U.S.
The metal sign is double-sided and retains its original mounting bracket, to an overall size of 37.5˝ x 12˝.
It's tough and weather-proof, which makes it a rare piece you can display outdoors.
And its story makes it a piece of Los Angeles history.
The history behind the sign
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard runs for 7 miles through Los Angeles, from Obama Boulevard to South Alameda Street.
It was originally called 40th Street, and then later Santa Barbara Avenue, before being renamed in King's honour in 1983.
The campaign to change the street name was led by local businessman Celes King III.
"I felt that there was a clear need with the [1984] Olympics coming to Los Angeles for us to have an opportunity to display to the international community that Martin Luther King was a major factor as far as Los Angeles is concerned," he said in a 1987 interview.
"I said, 'Hey, this is going to be a piece of cake'. Little did I know what I was facing!"
He had a tough battle to convince local business owners and the city council; but his campaign was backed by high-profile figures such as Stevie Wonder and the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
"When we went to war, we went with 350 preachers and busloads of people," he said. "When we showed up at the city hall, there was not even standing room."
The street name was officially changed on January 15, 1983: Martin Luther King's birthday. 5000 people attended the event, and the celebration grew into the city's annual Kingdom Day Parade.
And did you know...?
The first street in America to pay tribute to King was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Chicago.
It was renamed in August 1968, in the wake of social unrest just four months after his assassination in Memphis.
And ever since that day cities and towns across the U.S have followed suit in paying tribute to his memory. Today there are more than 1,000 streets around the world named after Martin Luther King. And that's not including the hundreds of libraries, schools, parks, and monuments also named in his honour.
You'll find them in almost every state in America, along with countries as far and wide as Austria, England and Peru. And the increasing number of streets in his name – which has almost doubled in the past 25 years – shows that legacy continues to grow stronger each year.
