Historic Oxford wall clock could bring £20k

An important Charles II walnut 30-hour striking hooded wall clock with alarm will be among the highlights at Dreweatts' Clocks and Scientific Instruments auction.

The clock is thought to have been crafted by John Knibb, circa 1685, a renowned clockmaker in Oxford, where he later twice became Mayor.

Features on the historic clock include a square gilt brass dial with a silvered arm disc and a finely sculpted steel hand, Roman numerals and typical Knibb-styled fleur-de-lys half-hour markers.

Its lower edge is signed "John Knibb Oxon Fecit".

According to Dreweatts, this rare fine clock was recently discovered by the vendor while sorting though effects inherited from a family member over 50 years ago.

The clock's mysterious owner history may also have involved it being in a connoisseur collection of Antiques and Works of Art, in the early 20th century.

Modern-day connoisseurs will certainly want to get a look at this timepiece when it goes under the hammer on February 17, estimated at £15,000-20,000.
