Elton's Versace clothes sale turns heads in London

Designer names are on show in piles in Covent Garden, London as Elton John and David Furnish have provided an array of clothes for a charity auction.

Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier and Prada were well represented, though it was clothes by Gianni Versace which drew the most attention. The exclusive clothes are on offer at modest prices ranging from £10 to £2,000, though his stage costumes are being sold through sealed bids.

In some cases, however, it was clear that the clothes themselves were of primary interest to buyers. One mentioned to her friend "If they're size 8 they're Elton's. David is an eight and a half."

The memorabilia aspect can be extremely important to celebrity clothes sales as the recent sale of Audrey Hepburn dresses shows - though Elton is obviously not a style icon in quite the same sense. Previous sales of his clothes have fetched £400,000 in London and around £700,000 ($1.14m) in New York.

Memorabilia collectors interested in stars' clothing should take a look at a piece of Marilyn Monroe's lingerie we currently have available.

The legendary music star's clothes will remain on sale until this weekend, with shelves restocked daily. The proceeds will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
