Atlantic City - the resort city on America's eastern seaboard - could soon be getting a new attraction: a museum dedicated to Donald Trump.

The group of historians behind the plan believe the down-on-its-luck city, which suffers from mass unemployment, needs a tourism boost.

And they hope the museum could do just that.

Trump owned three casinos in the city during a 26-year association that ended in 2009. All three went bankrupt. The Trump Taj Mahal, which kept the president elect's name long after he had ceased ownership, closed its doors for good in October this year.

Bob Blaskiewicz, a Stockton University professor who is among those pushing for the museum, said to the Press of Atlantic City: "Let's face it, the subject of Donald Trump in Atlantic City is going to be of historical interest, especially now that he has been elected President.

"People are going to be interested in what his long-term impact has been on the city."

Blaskiewicz and his team are now seeking memorabilia and stories from those who worked in the three Trump casinos in the city.

Levi Fox, owner of Jersey Shore Tours that runs Trump walking tours in Atlantic City, added to the publication: "This is something that could drive people to the city.

"You look at what is happening in [first lady elect] Melania's hometown, and why couldn't that happen here?" Tourists are flocking to Sevnica, Slovenia following her husband's election victory.

There is no word yet when the museum will open.
