A rare letter written by John Dillinger whilst in County Jail at Crown Point, Indiana has just sold at auction in the US for over $60,000, over ten times then opening bid of $4,000-6,000.
The letter is dated December 18, 1932 and addressed to his niece Mary Hancock.
In the letter Dillinger discusses his wish to spend time with family at Christmas, telling her that this will be his last Christmas in jail and jokes that he might need to borrow money after he was released.
In fact Dillinger made his escape from the same County Jail on March 3, 1934 with a fake gun carved out of wood.
The letter was purchased by an individual in the Philadelphia area and will be held in a private collection.
