Rare carved Colt revolver highlights Heritage Auctions at $50,000

A rare Colt revolver with factory-carved steer head pearl grips is the sought-after top lot of Heritage Auctions' June 8 Arms & Armor Signature Auction, to be held on June 8 in Dallas.

Colt single action steer head pearl grips
The gun was delivered to San Antonio in 1922, complete with custom engravings and inlays

Shipped new to San Antonio, the single action revolver has three gold Mexican coins inlaid among gold cactus blossom conchos. Produced in 1922, it remains in "almost mint" condition and is estimated at $25,000-50,000.

The auction features a range of rare Colt revolvers among its highlights. Also starring is a Harrington & Richardson top break revolver, accompanied by a letter from Madeleine Capone Morichetti, Al Capone's older brother's wife, who states it was owned by the notorious mobster.

Valued at $15,000-20,000, the gun could well exceed its estimate, given that another gun consigned by Morichetti to a Christie's auction in 2011 sold for $110,000.

'The ultimate quest on the bucket list' for some vintage memorabilia collectors

Among the memorabilia offered in the sale is a rare Winchester single "W" model 1890 cartridge board, which is described as "the ultimate quest on the bucket list" for collectors of vintage advertising.

A less common example bearing a single "W" in the design, it features an example of every bullet and cartridge produced by Winchester at the time. It is expected to sell for between $15,000 and $25,000.
