A rare Ottoman gold medal, made for the visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II to Constantinople in 1889, sold for £100,000 ($152,249) at Morton & Eden yesterday (April 22).
The impressive sale price represents a 900% increase on the medal's £10,000 top estimate.

The medal sought to commemorate the first of three visits Kaiser Wilhelm II would make to Constantinople.
The medal's obverse boasts a Tughra - or the official calligraphic monogram, seal or signature of the Ottoman sultan - above an elaborate trophy of arms. On its reverse, a German imperial eagle has been struck into the gold.
Although Kaiser Wilhelm enjoyed the ceremonial visit and all the lavish celebrations it entailed, his friendship with the sultan was to cause considerable political difficulties for Germany, particular with Russia.
