Medals of Marquess who saved man from 'deep rocky whirlpool' are for sale

Following on swiftly from their aviation auction, Dominic Winter is set to hold an interesting medals and militaria auction this Thursday, May 19 with around 230 lots on offer.

One of the highlights is a fine group of six medals awarded to Gavin Campbell, 1st Marquess of Breadalbane, Brigadier General.

Sir Gavin Campbell, 1st Marquess and 7th Earl of Breadalbane (1851-1922) succeeded his father to the earldom and other titles in 1871. He held various important posts in the royal household and elsewhere, including Brigadier General of the Royal Company of Archers (the sovereign's body guard in Scotland), Lord Steward (1892-95) and Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland (1907-22).

The medal set comprises a Jubilee Medal 1887 with clasp 1897, Coronation Medal 1902, (Edward VII), a Visit to Scotland Medal 1903, a Coronation Medal 1911, (George V), Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, (Edward VII) and a Royal Humane Society, small silver medal.

The heroic rescue that earned the Marquess his Royal Humane Society award took place in 1888 and involved the rescue of man from a flooded river (on the second attempt). Immediately below the scene of the rescue was a "deep whirlpool surrounded by rocks", which would have spelled the end for either man if they had not exited the river at the point they did.

Expected to sell for £3,000-4,000 (up to $6,500), the medal set will go under the hammer in the auctioneer's Gloucester base. It should make an excellent investment.
