![]() The Light Brigade charged against a heavily defended artillery battery in the battle of Balaclava |
The charge took place on October 25, 1854 during the Battle of Balaclava. A misheard order led to the loss of hundreds of English brigadiers as they raced into a heavily defended valley to assault an artillery battery.
The tragic incident was immortalised in Tennyson's poem The Charge of the Light Brigade, which contains the famous lines: "Into the valley of Death rode the six hundred."
