An important group of World War 1 medals are included in the Charterhouse specialist auction of coins, medals & stamps in Sherborne, UK, later this month.

"It is a fine group of medals awarded to Sgt Mark Mayson who served in the 5th Royal Irish Fusiliers during the First World War." Commented Richard Bromell.

"He was just one of a few in his regiment who was not only awarded the Military Medal, but also the Distinguished Conduct Medal in addition to his trio. Medal combination such as this rarely turn up at auction and combine this with a specialist sale, they should easily sell for £3,000-4,000." (That's up to $6,500.)

Sgt Mark Abraham Mayson served with "A" Squadron, 5th Lancers, and also acted as local regimental quartermaster sergeant. He was awarded his Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.

As a non-commissioned officer he set a fine example throughout the campaign. His cheerfulness and courage, many times under the most trying circumstances, had proved invaluable. He was killed in action aged 30 on August 9th 1918 during the fighting around Amiens and is buried in Rosieres Communal Cemetery near Amiens.

This group of medals, which also includes his bronze death plaque and school related medallions, should make an excellent investment and forms part of the Charterhouse specialist two day auction of coins, stamps, postcards, trains, clocks & collectors' items on Thursday 24th & Friday 25th March.
