Coins and banknotes - 2015 auction review

As ever, coins provided some of the most valuable sales in all of collecting this 2015.

While it wasn't quite the firework display of 2014, which saw a large number of US coins smash records throughout the year, there was a solid selection of pieces achieving good prices.

Take a look at some our favourites below.

Top coin sale of 2015

1794 Stacks Bowers
The 1794 dollar is the first to be minted in the US

The Lord St Oswald 1794 flowing hair was this year's top sale, with a final price of $5m achieved at Stacks Bowers in October.

The coin is the first dollar ever minted in the US. Only 1,758 were produced.

This particular specimen is graded mint state 66+ and its provenance can be traced back to the date it was minted, making it a hugely attractive proposition for collectors.

2015's most important coin sales

An 1870-s seated Liberty dollar realised $505,500 at Heritage Auctions in May. The coin is the rarest standard issue US dollar, one of only nine in existence.

In August, a 1747 Ferdinand VI gold escudos from Guatemala made $235,000 in a sale at Heritage Auctions. With a mint state of 61 it's a particularly fine example of an issue that is only usually available in lower grades.

A 1643 Charles II declaration £1 coin made £56,120 ($82,689) at Duke's of Dorchester in March. It was minted in Oxford during the English civil war. Charles moved the court there after he was booted out of London.

This AD 307-337 gold solidi of Constantine the Great was the star of a September auction at Bonhams Los Angeles with a final price of $198,000.

The coin is one of very few surviving as the majority were melted down after being discovered during a dig in France in 1780.

The most unusual sale of 2015

Seychelles sex banknote
The banknote was issued sometime between 1968 and 1973

A 50 rupee Seychelles banknote bearing an unusual message sold at Duke's in Dorchester, UK in October.

The lot displays the word "Sex" hidden in the palm trees behind the Queen's head. It's thought to have been printed in protest against the British government.

It was a breakout year for…

Anglo Saxon coins are rare at auction. That's why the sale of a major collection of them at Spink London in March was one of the major events of the year.

The highlight? Undoubtedly this 7th century Northumbrian coin that sold for £14,000 ($20,830).

It was a year to forget for…

Banknotes. Compared to last year, when a US Grand Watermelon $1,000 treasury note sold for $3.2m, top sales have been thin on the ground.

One you may have missed

silver 2p coin
The silver 2p error sold for charity

This British 1971 silver 2p piece was discovered in a donation box at Reading hospital and sold for £800 ($1,244) in a charity auction.

The rare errors are produced when a cupro-nickel blank is left in the press by mistake and are very rarely distributed.
