1899 Carson City dollar could exceed $20,000 in US coin auction

An MS61-graded 1899 Carson City dollar is set to headline a US Coins Signature Auction at Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills with a minimum bid of $20,000.

Already rare with a low mintage of around 350,000, it's estimated that around 250,000-325,000 were melted down in later years following the silver recall.

The 1889-CC Morgan dollar is a key year issue

Morgan dollars are highly collectible as a result of their turbulent history. They were issued in large numbers between 1878 and 1904 as the result of various acts requiring the government to make compulsory silver purchases.

The present lot is a key issue - almost equal to the 1893-S, an example of which realised $103,603 in a 2012 sale at Heritage.

An MS64-graded 1846-O seated Liberty dollar is expected to exceed $15,000 at the November 6-10 sale.

The lot is a first year issue struck at the New Orleans Mint. Only 59,000 were made, the majority of which were heavily circulated - making this near mint example exceptionally rare (only four are registered at the same grade).

Heritage explained: "There was little interest in branch mint issues before Augustus Heaton published his treatise on mintmarks in 1893, so few examples of the 1846-O were saved by contemporary collectors.

"As a result, the 1846-O is reasonably available in lower circulated grades, but the issue is a prime condition rarity at the MS64 grade level."
