1898 Sungarei silver dollar auctions for $206,500

A Sinkiang Province, 1898 Sungarei silver dollar has more than doubled its presale estimate to auction for $206,500.

The hugely rare coin, among the scarcest of Chinese milled dollars, sold at Baldwin's Ma Tak Wo Hong Kong Coin auction on August 22, helping the sale to a $1.2m total.

Elsewhere at the sale a 1953 People's Bank of China, 10 yuan note sold for $15,000 against a $3,000 high estimate, while a Yuan dynasty silver 50 tael sycee made $34,000.

Baldwin's chairman and oriental specialist, Edward Baldwin, said following the sale: "Our 55th Hong Kong Coin auction was one of the most exciting since Baldwin's first became involved in the venture.

"To have achieved such a fantastic response to our Sungarei dollar, from a range of potential buyers and coin collectors, was hugely encouraging."
