Just 858 specimens of the muscle car model were built, making them highly collectible and extremely popular when they appear at auction.
The royal maroon four-speed beauty sold for $225,000, more than $100,000 clear of the second biggest seller, a five-speed 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Resto Mod, which made $120,000.

This Boss featured power steering, power front disc brakes and competition level suspension.
Aside from rarity, it is easy to see why the model is such a popular choice with collectors, with its muscle car styling and top end performance.
The $225,000 figure is one of the highest prices seen for a 1969 Boss at Mecum in recent years.
One of the 858 realised $275,000 at a Mecum Indianapolis sale in May 2008, while another made $230,000, also at Indianapolis, in May 2010.
For those who missed out this time around, there are further opportunities to capture a 1969 Boss later in the year, when a Fastback version comes to auction at Mecum's Monterey, California sale in August.
Other classic beauties to successfully sell at the weekend's auction were a 1957 Ford Thunderbird E Code Automatic, which achieved $75,000, and a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 327/360 HP, four-speed, which made $60,000.
A 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 327/350 HP realised $46,000, while a four-speed 1957 Chevrolet 150 two-door sedan 454 CI automatic went for $45,000.
Watch this space for further muscle car sales later in the year.
