Prince Charles' Aston Martin up 70.1% on estimate at Bonhams

A 1994 Aston Martin Virage Volante once used by Prince Charles sold for £119,100 at Bonhams' Aston Martin sale in the UK on May 19.

In doing so the 6.3-Litre convertible beat its £70,000 high estimate by 70.1%, evidence that the combination of the classic car brand and royal ownership make for an alluring mix - PFC Auctions is currently auctioning a range of royal memorabilia in its online sale, which runs until May 24.

Prince Charles’ Aston Martin is one of several royal cars to sell well recently

The racing green, manual transmission four-seater featured leather upholstery and green carpets.

It was loaned to Prince Charles by the Aston Martin Lagonda company from 1994 to 2007 or 2008, since when it had been on display at Aston Martin's south London headquarters.

It is not the first time a royal car has achieved strong figures at auction.

A 1984 Daimler, driven by Queen Elizabeth II between 1984 and 1990, sold for $70,000 at a US auction in August 2010.

A Lanchester Straight-8 Limousine, once owned and driven by King George VI, made £29,325 at Bonhams in 2009.

Prince Charles is also the owner of an Aston Martin DB6; newlyweds Prince William and Kate Middleton unexpectedly drove the car outside Buckingham Palace on their wedding day last year.

The car was a 21st birthday present to Charles from the Queen in 1969.
