The coachwork was created by James Young Coachbuilders of London. Elvis requested a number of modifications, including a Blaupunkt Koln radio, air conditioning and a bar.

The sale took place as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California. Mecum's Monterey auction saw a Ferrari 250 Series II Cabriolet sell for $2.2m.

A selection of Elvis memorabilia crossed the block in an auction at Graceland on August 14.
