Classic Ferrari 250 GTO car is 'world's #2 most expensive' in $31.6m sale

It's yet another World Record price for Ferrari. This classic 250 GTO car has become the most expensive car in the UK after bringing more than £20m (approximately $31.6m).

The 250 GTO is now the world's second most expensive classic car. It has overtaken the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa prototype which sold for $16.39m in Pebble Beach in August, 2011, an increase of 92%.

This £20.2m 250 GTO is one of just 39 cars manufactured by Enzo Ferrari's firm between 1962-1964. It bears many hallmarks of the marque's 1960s classic designs.

Beneath the car's bonnet is a V12 engine with a top speed of 174mph.

According to UK newspaper The Sun, the car is understood to have been sold by collector John Hunt. Hunt bought the car for £15.7m in 2008.

If so, then Mr Hunt's Ferrari brought him a profit of £4.5m in just over four years.

Other notable 250 GTs sold on the markets include a Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder formerly owned by Hollywood legend James Coburn.

It bought by BBC DJ Chris Evans for $10.9m in 2008.

The 1936 Bugatti Type 57sc Atlantic remains the world's most expensive car. It sold for an undisclosed sum between $30m-40m in 2010. Another is owned by fashion impresario Ralph Lauren.
