'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, collectors love you...' Iconic car flies into auction

It remains iconic and much-loved ever since its debut big screen appearance alongside stars Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes in 1968...

So globally famous is this car among grown-up collectors and children alike that even Michael Jackson once tried unsuccessfully to buy it for his Neverland Ranch.

Now, 42 year years after it became famous, collectors have a chance to succeed where the King of Pop failed when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang appears for sale on the private markets.

Pierre Picton, the car's 76-year-old owner, has finally decided to part ways with 'Chitty'. It will be auctioned in Los Angeles and is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The car's provenance matches its estimated value. Picton has owned the car since it made its cinema debut, even standing in for Dick Van Dyke for many of the film's driving scenes.

Chitty is still in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, UK, where it has resided for the past 50 years. The car will make one final public appearance in the UK before travelling out to California.
