Bugatti Type 35 prototype to star in Bonhams' Quail Lodge auction

Bonhams has announced that its forthcoming Quail Lodge auction will star the prototype of the Bugatti Type 35 on August 16.

Bugatti Type 35 Prototype
This was the first Type 35 ever built, and also the one driven by Ettore Bugatti himself

The sale will take place during this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, California.

All of the major classic car auction houses will be in attendance, with Mecum Auctions offering the Ferrari replica used in 1980s cult movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The Bugatti is a truly remarkable consignment. Not only is this the first prototype of the seminal model ever built, but it was also the same one that Le Patron, Ettore Bugatti, debuted at the Grand Prix of Lyon in 1924 and drove personally.

There were just six examples of the Type 35 produced, with the car earning its place as one of the greatest racing car designs of all time.

The example at auction is well document and well known among Bugatti enthusiasts, with previous owner including Sir Robert and Lady Bird, Colonel G Giles (Chairman of the Bugatti Owners Club) and Henry Haga, chief designer at Chevrolet.

Also starring is the Earls Court Motor Show 1952 Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica Mk2, which has had just two owners from new.

Delivered new to American racer Stuart "Duke" Donaldson, the car was raced in the 1953 12 Hours of Sebring, before being passed to George S Waltman, a legendary collector who has owned the car ever since and campaigned it at races across the US.
