A race suit worn by Formula One legend Ayrton Senna has sold as part of RM Auctions' May 10 auction in Monaco, just days after the 20th anniversary of his death.
|
The suit, worn during the 1991 season in which Senna won his third world championship, sold for $76,456 - testament to his beloved status among racing fans.
With the Monaco Grand Prix just around the corner (May 22-25), the sale had a selection of competition cars driven by some of the most famous names in racing history.
|
The top seller among these was a prototype of the legendary 1956 Maserati 450S by Fantuzzi, which was the works entry for the 1956 Mille Miglia, driven by British ace Stirling Moss.
Selling for $4.8m, the car met a sticky end in the Mille Miglia when it careered off the road, coming to rest in the branches of a tree over a huge ravine. Moss and his navigator, Denis Jenkinson, walked away unharmed.
However, the Maserati prototype did not, and was returned to the factory for repairs and further improvements. It lived out its days as a test car, before being returned to Italy in the 1980s where it saw a full restoration with the help of the Maserati factory.
There's always a Ferrari at or near the top of a classic car auction. RM's Monaco sale was no different - a 1966 275 GTB/c by Scaglietti, considered the finest of its kind, headlined at $7.8m.
