$218,000 Rolls Royce takes centre stage at Herefordshire classic cars sale

A truly stunning Rolls Royce is set to be the star attraction of Brightwells' classic car auction on December 1.

The sale features a number of notable collector cars, but without doubt the standout lot is the Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghost.

Originally shown at the Olympia Motor Show of 1906, the Rolls-Royce 40/50 was built with "such immense precision and total disregard for cost that it literally ran like clockwork".

This Silver Ghost was registered on January 1 1922 and has been extensively restored to an award-winning standard; both the body and the engine have been completely stripped and re-built, the gearbox has been overhauled and the upholstery re-trimmed by experts in each field.

It has a relatively low mileage despite being used on tours of Japan and Denmark, and is in excellent running order. Its pre-sale estimate is £110,000 - £140,000, but could certainly see higher in today's strong collector car market.

Other notable lots include an Alvis Silver Eagle SF 16.95 Saloon, built in 1934. This car has also been completely restored, and retains its original leather and woodwork interior. It also has two intriguing additional instruments, possibly suggesting an aeronautical connection: a Jaeger World War 2 bomber trip-timer clock and an aero magnetic compass (ideal for a car designed for long distance touring).

The car has an estimated price of £18,000 - £22,000, which could prove to be a bargain for the right collector.

On the more modern side, the auction will also feature a 1969 Aston Martin DBS Vantage. Famously used by George Lazenby's James Bond in the 1969 film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', the DBS was manufactured between September 1967 and April 1972 during which time just 787 examples were produced.

The car has been superbly restored (including a full engine re-build) and has an estimate of £30,000 - £35,000, which should attract collectors given the rise in popularity and price of these models in recent years.

Brightwells have been no strangers to success with their sales, breaking six world record prices in 2009 alone, and their most recent auction in September took £1.16m. With a selection of 209 vintage cars and motorcycles there should be something for every level of collector and investor to drive home in.
