1974 Ducati 750 motorbike auctions for $109,000

A 1974 750 SS led an array of Ducatis at Bonhams' Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction this week.

It sold for $109,250 on January 26.

A major rarity from Ducati, it is the production version of the race bike Paul Smart rode to first place at 1972's Imola 200.

That victory created a huge clamour for the road version of the machine.

Motociclismo magazine further explains why the bike sold so well: "To say that the Super Sport 750 was one of the most beautiful sport bikes ever to be made is no exaggeration; it may be considered among the most significant motorcycles of all times."

A 1973 Ducati 750CC factory endurance bike also achieved a strong price. It sold for $40,250.

Built by the Ducati Corse factory race team for the 1973 Bol d'Or 24-Hours, this was the reserve bike at the landmark event.

It was also the race bike at the Isle of Man TT, North West 200 and the Irish Road Racing Championship.

Bonhams’ US head of motorcycles, Nick Smith, said prior to the sale: "It's true that the number of Ducatis we've consigned is impressive, but it's the quality and selection, not to mention the incredible pedigree, that's just amazing.

“For Ducatisti – or anyone who ever wanted a Ducati – our auction represents a very special opportunity."

The auction also featured the $195,000 sale of a 1914 Feilbach Limited 10HP.
