1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale could break records at Monterey

RM Auctions has upped the competition for the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance sales, unveiling a stunning 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale just weeks before the August 16-17 event.

One example of the Ferrari 275 GTB/C is tipped to be the first car to sell for more than $100m, should it ever come up for sale

The Monterey, California auction is RM's flagship sale, with some of the finest cars in the world set to cross the block.

The Ferrari certainly lives up to that title, with the auction house stating "it will command the attention of the world's most discerning collectors, and comfortably achieve eight-figures."

Chassis 06701 is the first of only three Berlinetta Competizione cars, which were hand-built for endurance racing. While one of the three won its class at Le Mans, this example was used as a road car from new.

However, its illustrious provenance has seen it compete at historic events in the hands of renowned Ferrari collector Brandon Wang.

The 275 GTB/C was a progression of the 250 GTO, and looks set to challenge its title

"06701's almost unbelievable rarity and high performance are matched only by its stunning good looks. Simply put, this is one of the most important Ferraris in the world, and absolutely one of the most important motor cars ever to come to auction," says Shelby Myers, senior specialist at RM Auctions.

"These cars were a clear evolution of the GTO concept, one of which set a record at Le Mans that stands to this day. 06701's two sister cars are in highly respected private collections, from which they will certainly not emerge in the near future. This sale is unquestionably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Bonhams will challenge the 275 GTB/C with a Ferrari 250 GTO - currently the world's most valuable car - offered in its own sale held during the Pebble Beach Concours.

Both are strong contenders for the title of the world's most expensive car sold at auction, held by Juan Fangio's Mercedes W196.
