The official auctioneer of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Gooding & Company, has seen superb results in Monterey on August 17-18, with its auction topped by a 1957 Ferrari 250 GT 14-Louver Berlinetta.

The car, an important competition Ferrari, sold for $9.4m. It is one of only nine examples ever built, with just eight of those remaining today.
The car is prized for its illustrious racing heritage, having secured ninth overall and fourth in class at the 1957 Mille Miglia, as well as fourth overall in the 1957 Coppa Inter Europa.
A matching numbers example, it was also a participant in the inaugural Colorado Grand in 1989. It has since undergone a stunning restoration in the hands of noted marque specialist Dennison International, which helped it to become an award winner at the 2010 Pebble Beach event.
The world record for any Ferrari at auction was set at RM Auctions' Monterey sale, with a 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder realising $27.5m.

Also selling in the Gooding auction was an exceptional example of the 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante, considered a masterpiece in automotive design. With fantastic provenance, a first in class award and French cup from Pebble Beach under its belt, it sold for $8.7m.
The Atalante's predecessor, the Type 57SC Atlantic, holds the record for the most expensive car ever sold, realising an unconfirmed $30-40m at Gooding & Company in 2010.
Also featuring was a 2002 Ferrari F1 car driven by Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello, which sold for $2.2m.
In total, the Monterey auctions saw a record $301.9m in sales, with the values of vehicles up 14%, according to Hagerty Insurance.
