The auction house comments: "Instantly recognizable not only by automobile buffs, but virtually anyone on the planet, the immortal 300SL (which stands for Sports Leicht in German) Gullwing coupe arguably competes for the title of 'Greatest Sports Car of the 1950s', and surely qualifies for anyone's Top 10 list of the greatest automobiles of all time.
"A period favourite of wealthy celebrities, it ranks today among the most valued and collectable sports cars ever produced."
The present lot formerly belonged in the collection of one of Italy's top car traders and has been kept in exceptional condition over the years.
The record for a 300 SL stands at $1.6m, set at RM Auctions in 2013.
A 1938 BMW 328 roadster is estimated to make $515,584-644,481.
The car was the company's second four-door saloon and included a powerful and pioneering engine that was swiftly adopted by British manufacturers after the second world war.
The present lot was discovered in Germany during the early 2000s and shipped back to the UK, where it was heavily restored.
The sale takes place on April 18.
