1931 Chrysler CG Imperial valued at $725,000 ahead of Motor City sale

A 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial Convertible Victoria is to lead RM Auctions Motor City sale on July 26 in Plymouth, Michigan with a $525,000-725,000 estimate.

The car, which features coachwork by Waterhouse, was bought in 1939 by a resident of New York and was one of few civilian vehicles to escape the scrap drive of the second world war.

For years it mouldered away before being fully restored in 2009.

Other Chrysler Imperials by Waterhouse have sold well in the past, with a similar example achieving $522,500 at RM Auctions in 2008.

A 1906 Studebaker Model G Touring, thought to be the oldest surviving four-cylinder model, is likely to prove another highlight with an estimate of $325,000-450,000.

The sale is named in tribute to Detroit's industrial heyday, as many of the cars offered in the sale were built in the city.

Mike Fairbairn, co-founder and specialist for RM Auctions, commented: "With its rich automotive history and culture, the Detroit area provides a terrific backdrop for some of the country's leading automotive events".

"We're thrilled to be returning in July to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our sale. The new name not only signals the event's important location, but celebrates the renaissance of Detroit as the 'Motor City', America's hot bed of automotive design, engineering and excitement."
