Pieter Goos' Zee Atlas to feature in New York auction

A rare Zee Atlas by Pieter Goos (1616-1675) is to auction at Swann Auction Galleries in New York on May 19.

Printed in Amsterdam in 1672, the work is one of the most important atlases of its era. It's expected to make $70,000-100,000.

 Zee Atlas Groos
Pieter Goos was a famous 17th century cartographer

Very few are known to exist, partly because the large size of the book meant that its cost would have been prohibitive.

Goos was among the first cartographers to map the coastlines beyond Europe, with the Zee Atlas featuring detailed maps of the world's oceans.

A handwritten manuscript by wildlife artist John James Audubon (1785-1851) is valued at $15,000-25,000.

He wrote the page in 1826 for his Ornithological Biography, the first volume of which was published in 1827. It followed on from his acclaimed Birds of America series and features extensive information on bird habits and biology.

He writes of the red-winged starling: "[A]s an Article of food they are little better than the Starling of Europe or Crow black bird of our United States although many are eat & thought good by the Country people whom make Pot pies of them."
