A first edition copy of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus has provided the highlight of the London International Antiquarian Book Fair.

Mary Shelley frankenstein first edition
Originally published anonymously, Mary Shelley's name did not appear until the second edition was published in France in 1823

The much-lauded horror classic, which was published anonymously over three volumes in 1818, sold for £110,000 ($172, 316). Offered by Peter Harrington of London, it was purchased by an anonymous US collector.

The London International Antiquarian Book Fair was held 13-15 June, with a record 186 exhibitors in attendance. The fair also saw an 18% increase on the number of visitors it received in 2012, demonstrating the strength of the rare book market.
