Smith popularised the space opera genre

The books (Triplanetary, First Lensman, Galactic Patrol, Gray Lensman, Second Stage Lensmen, Children of the Lens) comprise a complete set of the Lensman series.

Smith (1890-1965) was a chemical engineer who enjoyed a second career as a writer of hugely popular space operas.

He is often credited with establishing the genre with his debut, The Skylark of Space (1928), which was initially published in iconic science fiction periodical Amazing Stories.

The lot is one of just 75 presentation sets issued before publication. It's inscribed "Friend of old and one of the choice few who made this new idea possible. In sincere appreciation - Doc (Edward E. Smith, PhD."

PBA describes the lot as "a legend in specialty publishing and fine bookmaking. A collector's dream...One of those specialty press productions that causes awe for many contemporary collectors."
