Batman #1 comic valued in excess of $65,000

A VG+ 4.5-graded copy of Batman #1 (1940) could make in excess of $65,000 at Heritage Auctions' comics sale in Dallas on May 28.

The comic was the first solo outing for the caped crusader (who made his debut in Detective Comics #27) and features the first appearance of arch super villains the Joker and Catwoman.

Heritage comments: "The revered issue, already #6 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list, continues its assault on another iconic Golden Age issue - Marvel Comics #1.

"It's conceivable that within the next 2-3 years, it will rank #5…there are only 24 known nicer copies according to CGC's census, and 25% of those are bunched just a notch above our offering at VG/FN 5.0. A comparable 4.5 copy just sold for over $75,000 in our most recent Signature auction!"

A CGC 5.5-graded copy of Captain America #1, with its famous cover that shows the eponymous hero punching Hitler in the face, is valued at more than $38,000.

Heritage says: "We have only seen two unrestored copies of this book in the past three years and they were a 6.0 and a 6.5 copy."
