'Keep writing in...' - letter from Elvis to please his fans could bring $20,000

As we've reported, Victorian Casino Antiques auction is likely to be led by an organ with a Stinson Organ Company Front on a Wurlitzer Double Tracker Band Organ.

There are more than 75 slot machines and 20 jukeboxes available in the sale; in a largely mechanical auction a large proportion of the lots are music-related.

But perhaps the item which many music collectors would be most excited about is not mechanical at all: an early handwritten Elvis Presley letter.

The letter is not described at all by the auctioneer, but is dated January 16 1956 and addressed to fans Jean Ann and Patsy from the Elvis fan club headquarters.

It reads:

"Glad to hear from you and thanks loads for the nice compliments. I hate to have to be the one to tell you but we haven't had any wallet-size photos made, but we are getting so many letters for them that we'll have to have them made real soon.

"Keep writing in and when we get some you'll be one of the first to get one."

After signing off, Elvis acknowledges other letters from the fans in a PS, and apologises for the slowness of the mail in delivering them what they wanted.

The classic letter, capturing Elvis's well known generosity to his fans (and others) carries a broad estimate of $2,000-20,000 in the March 11-13th auction. Fans still pining for a signed photo of The King will be pleased to know that a few are available at the moment such as this one.
