Is this man 2012's best alternative investment?

What's in a name?

When it comes to investing in collectibles, the answer is everything.

A booming market

You may remember that back in January, I cited Winston Churchill memorabilia as 2012's best investment.

Well, I hate to say I told you so, but eight months down the line those of you that took my advice will now be sitting pretty on a fascinating piece of history that is well on its way to increasing its worth considerably.

This is demonstrated by the sterling results we have already seen from Winston Churchill memorabilia so far in 2012…

·         In April, a previously unseen photograph of Churchill brought a 25% increase on its high estimate.

·         A menu from the 1941 Atlantic Conference signed by Churchill sold for $21,150 in June.

It has also recently been announced that Churchill's Series 1 Land Rover, given to the war-time prime minister as an 80th birthday present in 1954, is expected to bring $94,290 in October. A normal Series 1 model from the same era costs around $9,000 today - that's a 947.6% increase in value produced by his name alone.

Even if we take the top-end Series 1 model as our example, one of which sold at Bonhams in September 2011 for $17,500, that's still a 437.2% increase in value.

That's why I believe Winston Churchill is one of the most powerful names for investment in 2012. His success as a prime minister, his famed personality and his iconic look all contribute to his auction success.

Proven consistency

But it's not just in 2012 that we have seen the strength of Churchill memorabilia.

Churchill signed photos grew 7.82% pa in value between 2000-2011, according to the PFC40 Autograph Index.

A set of his dentures sold for $26,830 at Bonhams in 2010, beating their estimate by 249.6%. One of his iconic half-smoked cigars also sold that year for an impressive $6,910 - proof that his most personal and unique items are in strong demand.

Further increases expected

shows his compassionate side

With a steady upward progression in values, now is the time to capitalise on his legacy. In 2015, values for his items will receive a further boost as the world commemorates the 50th anniversary of his death.

I am pleased to say that our experts have sourced some of the finest Winston Churchill memorabilia available on the market today. Like this autographed letter, in which Churchill expresses a compassionate side that he was so rarely able to display as a war-time leader.
