Two magnificent pictures from the collection of celebrated author and co-founder of the SNP, Sir Compton Mackenzie (1883-1972) are heading for auction.
Mackenzie, writer of much-loved Ealing Comedy Whisky Galore, among other noted works, was a neighbour of celebrated Scottish artists Sir William McTaggart (1835-1910) and Anne Redpath (1895-1965), who both lived in Edinburgh's New Town.

Sir William is represented in the upcoming sale by a fine oil painting entitled After Rain, Drummond Place, which is expected to fetch up to £10,000.
Redpath's gouache of Kyleakin, Skye is estimated at £5,000.
Both of these important works are being offered by a descendant of the Mackenzie family.
This remarkable sale will also feature work by a number of eminent artists including Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840), John Duncan Fergusson (1874-1961) and George Leslie Hunter (1877-1931).
Also included are works by Joseph Farquharson (1846-1935) and Sir Robin Philipson, 1916-1992, including a selection of striking portraits, vivid still life arrangements and an array of beautiful landscapes.
Chris Brickley, Head of Picture Department at Bonhams Edinburgh comments:
"The McTaggart is a strong, much-exhibited work, one of the best I have seen, and the lovely little Redpath appears to have been a seventy-fifth birthday gift from the painter.
"Mackenzie loved the islands of the West Coast, having a house on Barra, and Redpath clearly felt he would enjoy this picture."
The lots will be offered at Bonhams Fine Paintings Sale in Edinburgh on December 4 2009.
